The Feelings of February

L is for          Laughter--children laugh 500 times a day.  What is your tally?

Lightheartedness--most centenarians have an attitude that includes playing like a child.

Let Go--worry less; a lot less

Love--the greatest healer, the solution to everything, the glue of the universe, the essence of who we are.

O is for     Outrageous--what are you waiting for?  Who knows what tomorrow will bring!

Oneness--the core of every religion is the idea that the one became many.  What if it were true, and we were truly all one?  How would you treat others?

Outlook--we ALWAYS have a choice--thought is powerful indeed, but what seems even more powerful is the ability to change our thoughts.  They can either be supportive or sabotaging.  The choice is ours and those choices determine the quality of our life.

Openness--being open to new  ideas and receptive to your perfect place in the universe, will help keep you enthusiastic about life.

Order.  There is order in this ever-changing world and universe we live in.  By clarifying your values and understanding your beliefs and motivation, you begin to recognize you place in life's puzzle.

V is for     Vulnerable--a feeling that leaves us open to pleasure as well as pain

Vacation--take a permanent one from negative thinking.  Give yourself time away from the routine.  Change of pace and environment is healthy and is always important.

Versatile--learning to adapt to change  and look at life from multiple angles minimizes stress and will make life flow more smoothly.

Visionary--sit back, relax, and let your mind become conscious of the direction you are given when you listen.  We are each visionary in our creativity.  If you can envision it--you can make it happen!

E is feeling    Enthusiastic--the Greek root is en theos (in God).  When we are enthusiastic about our life, we re in the flow--we ARE the flow.

Encouraging--offer encouragement to friends when you sense it is needed--not feeling sorry for them, but having compassion and letting them know you are there.

Energetic--physically--we can feel energet through good nutrition, drinking pure water, and adequate exercise; mentally we can monitor our thoughts and beliefs; emotionally we can express our feelings and follow our heart; spiritually, we can live life with passion and commitment.

Enlightened--to turn on the light--to live a life that is free-to know YOU are THE LIGHT.  What does it mean to you?

Exceptional--You are exceptional-unique-one of a kind.  Trust your heart, live wisely--reason and feel, do and be.  Live the life you were meant to live.

Kid's Say the Greatest things!

Insights about Love from the eyes of a child

Kid's don't seem to miss a thing--from asking why we kiss with our eyes closed, to making profound and often funny comments about life and love.  Following are several quotes we received via e-mail. A group of professionals posed the question "What is Love?" to a group of 4 to 8 year-olds.  Here are some of their responses.  We're sure you'll get a grin here and there!

"When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different.  You know that your name is safe in their mouth."--Billy, age 4

"Love is when you go out to eat and give somebody most of your French fries--without making them give you any of theirs."--Chrissy, age 6

"Love is when someone hurts you.  And you get so mad but you don't yell at them because you know it would hurt their feelings."--Samantha, age 6

"Love is what makes you smile when you're tired."--Terri, age 4

"Love is what's in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents and listen."--Bobby, age 5

"If you want to learn to love better, you should start with a friend who you hate."--Nikka, age 6

"You think when you tell someone something bad about yourself and you're scared, they won't love you any more.  But then you get surprised because they still love you, but even more."--Matthew, age 7

"I know my older sister loves me because she gives me all her old clothes and has to go out and buy new ones."--Lauren, age 4

"When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn't bend over and paint her toenails anymore.  So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hands ot arthritis too.  That's love."--Rebecca, age 8

LOVE--it comes in many forms--from the love of a child to the love of your family pet, from the love of music and love of art to the LOVE we share with a friend.  It's  all the same "LOVE"; but it shows itself to us in hundreds of ways everyday. This February, let's have an attitude filled with love, from the micro to the macro!

The 'Attitude Hour'

If you've tuned into the 'Attitude Hour' over the past month, you've probably heard some of our great guests.   We were fortunate to have Jeff Moyer (http://www.jeffmoyer.com) join Alexandra to discuss his 'Music from the Heart'.  A Cleveland based, internationally known singer/songwriter and advocate for kids, Jeff covers such topics as, character education, the healing of inclusion, ridicule and violence, and disability and diversity.  Please visit his web site and/or consider sponsoring him into your area.  He has a tremendous impact on young people, with wisdom to share with all of us.

Dr. Tabin, of the University of Vermont Himalayan Cataract Project, shared information about his work with treatable blindness in the Himalayan regions.  Dr. Tabin and Dr. Sanduk Ruit are seeking to disseminate cataract surgical skills, minimize costs, and make it possible for the thousands of people in the region to receive necessary and affordable  surgery and medical care for cataracts.  Visit their web site at http://www.cataractproject.org.

Just yesterday Alexandra connected with two kindergarten teachers from California, Marla Loew and Janie Hamilton.  Their interests and research led them to develop the book "Character Connections", a weekly parent-child homework program for parents and children.  While it was met with some initial resistance from parents (Oh NO!, I thought I'd put homework behind me!), their assessment confirms increased academic achievement and involvement as a result of the program.  92% of the parents felt this program was useful to their family.  77% of the families surveyed felt they spent more time discussing values with their children, etc. Recommended for grades K-6.  Contact Marla or Janie by e-mailing CharacterChat@aol.com.  Their future plans include adapting the material to teenagers.

Additional topics this month were: sex education, bi-polar disorder/mental illness and young people, and the power of our attitudes, beliefs and choices.  The new radio call-in program for young people--'The Attitude Hour', hosted by Alexandra Delis-Abrams, Ph.D., can be heard by connecting to the web at http://www.nabcinc.com  or by tuning into KFNX, Phoenix, or WALE, Providence, Rhode Island. We invite you to call in with questions, ideas, concerns at 602.277.KFNX, if you're in the Phoenix area, or toll free at 866.277.5369 for anyone outside of the Phoenix area. Tune in, call in, invite your friends to participate.

Friendship. . . In the beginning were there friends?

While researching thoughts and quotes about friendship, it occurred to me that there doesn't appear to be an era when friendship didn't exist.  Some of the following quotes indicate that friendship means many things to many people; but throughout history, friends have made impact enough to be written about over and over again.  Do you have a "best" friend?  What does that person mean to you? What's the difference between an acquaintance and a friend?  What has it meant in your life to have a friend with whom to talk, share, cry and laugh?  How do we pick our friends?  Is trust a component? Similarity? Do you desire your friends to have what you want for yourself? Consider your friends this month and sharing the love in your heart with them!

"Have no friends not equal to yourself."--Confucious (551-497 BC)

"I can never think of promoting my convenience at the expense of a friend's interest and inclination."--George Washington

"Without friends no one would choose to live, though he had all other goods."--Aristotle

"My best friend is the one who brings out the best in me."--Henry Ford

"The making of friends, who are real friends, is the best token we have of a man's success in life."--Edward Everett Hale

"Anybody can sympathize with the sufferings of a friend, but it requires a very fine nature to sympathize with a friend's success."--Oscar Wilde

"Friendship with oneself is all-important because without it one cannot be friends with anyone else in the world."--Eleanor Roosevelt

"Grief can take care of itself, but to get the full value of joy you must have somebody to divide it with."--Mark Twain

"The best mirror is an old friend."--George Herbert

Would you like to implement a program at your school or in your home to begin building a foundation for character development? The most effective method to develop character is to first encourage self-exploration.  Why do we do what we do? Why do we think what we think?  What am I feeling?  Please visit our web site at http://www.abcfeelings.com for the necessary tools to encourage the process of character development for your children.  Or, call us at 800.745.3170 for ideas on which products will best fill your needs!

Joan Bramsch saw a need and has filled it!  Recognizing that parents often fail to get the recognition they deserve, Joan created EmpoweredParenting.com--a web site designed to do just what it suggests.  Additionally, she works to bring our Elders into the action through the EP Caps4Kids Program--http://www.joanbramsch.com/parenting/caps4kids.shtml.  Caps are made by the elders and passed on to children in need of them.  Consider offering your assistance or passing the word on.  We're sure you'll enjoy Joan's contribution to the Internet and to the world at http://www.empoweredparenting.com.  You can e-mail Joan at empoweredparenting@earthlink.net.  Check out the the BackPack Project while you're there at http://www.joanbramsch.com/helpothers/backpack.shtml
